January Sew Sampler Project

January 2019 Sew Sampler

January Sew Sampler from Fat Quarter Shop

Included in this month’s sampler was the red Olfa’s Rotary Cutter, 40th Anniversary edition. It wasn’t even available in the stores yet.  After it debuted online in the stores a week or so later, it sold out within hours.  I was so glad to receive one in the monthly subscription box.

These subscription boxes are just awesome.  I wasn’t sure I would like spending money on the unknown, but so far, I am loving all of the projects and notions.

The little bird needle threader is so cute.  It has no wire, so it should last longer than the wire ones. Notepads are always welcome and this one has maybe 50 or so pages.

Little Snippets by Bonnie and Camille

January’s project was a cute little wallhanging using Bonnie and Camille’s “Little Snippets” honey bun and fabric. I had to add my own Bella white solid background and red polka dot binding as well as the backing.

Cookie Dough Quilt from Perfect 10

Cookie Dough Quilt

So, last month, I participated in the Perfect 10 Sampler Sew Along from Sew Emma’s “Perfect 10” book. The sampler consisted of one block from each of the 16 quilts. It gives the opportunity to see which block most appeals to you, I think.

After finishing the sampler, I knew that I wanted to do several of these quilts.  They are quick and easy and each quilt can be made from one fabric layer cake and 3 1/2 – 6 yards of background fabric.

This quilt is one of the largest.  It finishes at 88 1/2″ square which would work on a queen sized bed.

I like bright colors and “Farmhouse II” is so pretty with bright green, orange, aqua and navy.  I want to “use” this quilt and it will get dirty, so I chose Black on Black Cross Weave yardage for the background. I saw a quilt on Pinterest using this background and it really made the bright colors pop.  And … it won’t show dirt. It is a little thin, but will end up being really soft in the finished quilt.

I didn’t starch before I cut it out because I needed the entire 10″ on each piece of the layer cake for the pattern.  I used my Accuquilt GO! cutter to cut the 4.5″ and 5.5″ background squares and the background rectangles.  It wastes a little bit of fabric, but it shortened my cutting time considerably as well as being more accurate.

Goody Goody Binding Bag

Goody Goody Binding Bag

I have needed a hand sewing kit forever.  I ran across a video on YouTube (below) and really liked how this bag was constructed.  The compartment that holds wonder clips was the best selling point for me. The instructions for the bag can be found here.

This is a great project for scraps.  Each little section only takes a small piece of fabric, so leftovers work wonderfully for this. I have a huge pile of “Smitten” scraps. I had starched them heavily thinking that I needed them for my “Hexie Snowflake” quilt. I don’t like how stiff the pockets are now so I’m going to wash my bags to get out all of the starch.

What I will do differently next time I make this…

Aurifil Thread Spools

Aurifil Thread Spools

The tab that holds the thread has a velcro scrap on the end.  It is the end that you thread through the hole in the spool.  Small Aurifil thread that is on the wooden spool has a very small opening.  It won’t thread through.  Next time, I will either make the velcro a lot smaller (but it won’t hold as well) or use a small tie.  The plastic spools of small Aurifil have a larger opening and work fine.

Materials

I cut everything out and added some mesh for the internal pocket.  While constructing the bag, I decided against using it and made the pocket with the suggested fabric.  I may revisit this on a later bag some day….we’ll see.

It was quite simple to sew together.  I made both bags at the same time.  Almost as if I were chain piecing.  Maybe I’ll call this chain making. 🙂  So, I have one bag to use and one to put in my gift box for later.

I really like how the colors turned out.  The only thing I would change would be the binding on the tan bag. I think it is too light for the outside of the bag.

This is the video I found on YouTube.  I think the bright colors are what appealed to me most.

Sweetwater Tagged Label Subscription

Quilt Labels

I received my monthly labels from Sweetwater Co. and thought that you might like to see them.  The subscription is $7.50 per month for 2 personalized and dated labels.  The labels are printed on high quality iron-on fabric.  They are simple enough, yet still have style.

This month’s labels:

I have ordered labels from Border City Quilts on Etsy too.  They are so lovely.

I got 12 labels for $16. They iron on, but need to be topstitched around the sides for durability.

This past Christmas, I made 3 different travel bag sets for family members.  I used the Ultimate Travel Bag pattern from byannie.com. Her patterns are very detailed. However, I took the Craftsy class to learn the complicated parts of this pattern. The Craftsy course can be found here.

I used quilting cottons and Sew Stable foam interfacing for all of the items. After I got the hang of working with the heavy thick foam, I realized how easy this pattern actually is.  I would say that if you are an intermediate sewist, you can handle this project without taking the class.  I did, however, enjoy sewing along with Annie Unrein as she taught the class.

I made matching Hanging Cosmetics Bags too! They are on the large size and hold everything you need for a week long trip.

The bags have internal mesh pockets, 5 outer pockets and a strap to attach it to a roller suitcase handle.

I love them.  And … I gave them all away.  So, now I need to get some time to make myself a set.  🙂

Sew Sampler December 2018

November 2018 Sew Sampler

My Very First FQS Sew Sampler!

November 2018 Sew Sampler from The Fat Quarter Shop

So, I finally jumped in on of the monthly sampler boxes.  I chose the Sew Sampler from The Fat Quarter Shop because they always have to latest fabric lines in the freshest and most colorful collections. They are an online only shop so they “get it” when it comes to online customer service.  They also understand that to stay relevant to online customers, they need to have fresh new choices almost daily to keep interest.

December 2018 Sew Sampler

December 2018 Sew Sampler

I was very pleased. Of course there was a coupon code.  The coupons are usually a 20% discount for a particular category of items. This one was for thread.

Contents included:

  • Garden Variety Charm Pack
  • Farm to Garden Finishing Kit
  • Farm to Garden Wall Hanging Pattern
  • Mini Cupcake Mix Recipe #2 Pack
  • 2019 Desktop Calendar
  • 80 wt. Aurifil Natural White 100% Cotton Thread (my favorite)
  • Barn Block Recipe #8

I really liked to fabric and cut and stitched the wall hanging straight away.  It is relatively simple and the blocks went together quickly. With the finishing kit included, I could get the entire quilt top done. I ordered fabric for the backing and it is now awaiting the quilting process.

I loved this sampler! Everything about it. The 80 wt. thread was a pleasant surprise, however. I would never have bought that thin of thread on my own. This gives me the opportunity to try it.  I am planning on using it to quilt the wall hanging.  Stay tuned!  I’ll do a blog post on that specifically.
