Butterfly Pincushion

Butterfly Pincushion

Pincushions are so fun!  Don’t you think?  They take minimal fabric and supplies and go together quickly and make great gifts.

I used my small butterfly die from the GO! Qube Specialty Set-Serendipity by Edyta Sitar. I applied Ultra Lite Heat and Bond to my fabric BEFORE I cut out the butterfly.  It makes a crisp cut.

I used a simple zig zag stitch to attach to the 5 inch background. I added batting to the back of the appliqué, but I didn’t quilt it.  I wish I had.

I filled the pincushions with ground nut shells.  I like the weight and the scent of PlumEasy shells from Amazon.

More Pincushions!

Kimberly Jolly from Fat Quarter Shop did an interview with Carrie Nelson and they talked about her obsession with pincushions that led to her writting Pin Pals.

The book contains 40 patterns with detailed instructions.  It would make a good gift for a new quilter.

The patterns in the book use the teeny tiniest scraps.  I found that if the fabric has been starched they are easier to cut. It might be harder to sew, but I like the accuracy the starch gives.

I put the label from Border City Quilts on the back of each pincushion.  It may be overkill, but I like it.  Especially since these will end up in gift bags.  I want to make sure I get all of the credit. 🙂
